How I installed and use VPN at Umeå University

This worked for me in Ubuntu 14.04 on June 2015.

Installation

Request a VPN account from here, it is free.
While you wait for the account, install the following packages network-manager-pptp, network-manager-vpnc, and network-manager-openvpn.

sudo apt-get install network-manager-pptp

sudo apt-get install network-manager-vpnc

sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn

Once you have confirmation that you have an account, you will need the root password of your computer, firefox (It DOES NOT work in chrome), and java.
Go to https://vpn.umu.se
You will be ask for your CAS credentials.
Make sure that java is unabled in firefox.
Follow the instructions, at some point a terminal will open and you will be as to provide the root pasword for your machine.
Then the installation is done.

Create a shortcut

From the dash (top left button), search for "cisco", the "Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client" will be offered. Click on it.
Then right click on the new icon on the launcher and "Lock to Launcher".

Start the VPN

Click on the "Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client" icon.
Use your CAS credentials.
Done! You can now use Chrome, even if the install has to be done in Firefox.
